| Computers are an integral
part of a scientist's tools, no less so in astronomy where image
processing, theoretical modeling and numerical computation from
the bulk of the data reduction, analysis and simulation. The
ASIAA has established an efficient local network and computers.
Our hardware consists of several servers, workstations, PCs
and a high performance PC cluster. Academia
Sinica Computing Center has built a dedicated link to the
NTU Computer Center with 100 Mbit/sec bandwidth, which the
IAA shares with the AS IMS institute. The ASCC also set up
a failsafe network route to Hinet in case of network outage.Internet hacking has been prevalent and the
IAA is not immune to it. For general security we follow the
CERT(Computer Emergency Response Team) advisors. Adding to
that is our Sun Firewall which serves as our current network
gateway and filters all incoming port request. Currently only
SMTP, POP3, IMAP, http, ssh and X11 services are granted.
Email viruses and spam are blocked via commercial software
installed on the Linux mail server.
ASIAA's computing facilities provide
a good research environment. For data reduction and analysis,
we have IRAF, MIRIAD, AIPS++, AIPS, IDL and SuperMongo. Mathematica,
Maple, Matlab software helps us carry out symbolic calculation
and another powerful software, AVS, helps us to display numerical
data. For numerical simulation, we have 8 single-cpu machines
for sequencial jobs and 10 dual-cpu machines for parallel
jobs. All the details of hardward and software
will be listed below.
