| The SMA has been playing an important role in studying extragalactic objects. At ASIAA, nearby Seyfert galaxies have been intensively observed using the SMA to trace warm gas surrounding central active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and starburst rings to understand the role of molecular gas in AGN activities. An example is the 12CO(2-1) observations of the type 1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097. The CO map revealed a circumnuclear molecular ring with a radius of 700 pc, at the same location as the starburst ring, and a strong central concentration of molecular gas with a radius of 175 pc, which is coincident with the Seyfert nucleus, suggesting that warm and dense molecular gas is concentrated toward the Seyfert nucleus. |
