| Education
ASIAA is playing a
major role in educating Taiwanese students for astronomy
research, with close coordination with universities (such
as NTU, NCU, and NTHU). Many students are actively participating
in the research activities of ASIAA. Though ASIAA does not
provide its own degree program, most graduate students work
for their degrees under the supervision of ASIAA faculty
members jointly with the professors in their universities.
ASIAA also have research assistants at the graduate student
level. For undergraduate students interested in astronomy,
ASIAA provides Summer Student Program to give them research
experiences. Many summer students continue their research
after the summer program and produce publication-quality
scientific results. Several ASIAA faculty members provide
astronomy lectures in universities.
Research
Collaboration
Major part of the research
activities of ASIAA is done in collaboration with universities
and research institutes in Taiwan and abroad. We have various
programs for joint research projects, joint seminars and
conferences, visitor programs, and adjunct appointments.
Most of the ASIAA science meetings (including the Colloquium
and the Lunchtime Talk) are open to outsiders who are interested
in astronomy research. Our major research partners include
Australia Telescope National Facility, Canada-France-Hawaii
Telescope, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, National
Central University, National Taiwan University, National
TsingHua University, Purple Mountain Observatory, Smithsonian
Astrophysical Observatory, Yonsei University, among others.
International and national meetings hosted by ASIAA include
ASIAA/NCU Biannual Meeting, East Asian Meeting of Astronomy,
Star Formation Workshops, and Taipei Astrophysics Workshops.
Open
Opportunities
The ASIAA provides a rich
opportunity for students at all levels to carry out frontier
research under the supervision of Institute scientists.
In addition, students can participate in the various projects
carried out by the Institute (including hardware and software
efforts) under the guidance of both local scientists and
international partners. Talented undergraduate students,
usually from our Summer Student program, can find part-time
employment for typically 1 year to conduct research with
a selected mentor. This provides a deeper and richer research
experience than is possible in the Summer
Student program, and important preparation for future
graduate studies in astronomy and astrophysics. Talented
Bachelor's and Master's degree students can find full-time
employment as Research Assistants to augment their research
experience before or while applying to graduate schools
in Taiwan or overseas. ASIAA scientists teach several university
course in astronomy and astrophysics, and are actively involved
in joint supervision of graduate students in their Masters
or PhD theses research programs.
