Theory & Computational AP — Picture 3 A Tidally Distorted & Inflated Jupiter

With a distance from its Sun less than one-tenth of the distance between Mercury and our Sun, a young extrasolar Jupiter at the age of one million years is heated and inflated up to one-third of the size of our Sun due to tidal friction. Consequently, the Jupiter spills its gas to its Sun and gradually migrates away from its Sun. The picture of the extrasolar Sun illustrated here is made using ultraviolet light emitted by ionized Helium atoms in our Sun detected by the SOHO satellite.
