At ASIAA, there is a growing community of planetary scientists who are involved in a wide range of research topics.

In our own Solar System, the Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey (TAOS) aims to measure the size distribution of objects in the Kuiper Belt, Scattered Disc and Inner Oort Cloud. A successor survey, TAOS II, is currently under construction at San Pedro Mártir Observatory in Baja California, Mexico. This new survey will be more than one hundred times as powerful as its predecessor. In addition to the occultation surveys, the group is involved with the proposed Hyper Suprime Cam (HSC) Survey using the Subaru telescope. The proposed survey will cover up to 2000 square degrees down to a magnitude of g’=26.4. Finally, the group is discussing the possibility to join a successor to the Canada France Ecliptic Plane Survey (CFEPS) which will use the Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT).

On the theoretical side our group is involved in several areas of research. The first of these concerns the origin and dynamical evolution of the Solar System, in particular the orbital structure of the Kuiper Belt, Scattered Disc and Oort cloud. This work ties in directly with the TAOS and TAOS II projects. In addition, work is being done on the evolution of the terrestrial and giant planets at the time of the Late Heavy Bombardment of the terrestrial planets.

Our group is also involved in some work on extra-solar planets, both through the modeling of the interior structure and atmospheres of hot Jupiters and the habitability of terrestrial exoplanetary systems. Hot Jupiters are intensely illuminated, and tidally as well as magnetically interact with their parent stars.
Tidal interactions can dramatically change the interior structure of a young hot Jupiter and even destruct the planet in a proto-planetary disk, which may explain the mass distribution of hot Jupiters observed today. Numerical simulations are being conducted to study the planet-induced emissions from a planet-host star via magnetic interactions. Atmospheric circulation on hot Jupiters driven by stellar irradiation are being investigated in terms of linear waves.
