Discovery of a Strong Lens Galaxy Embedded in a Cluster at z = 1.62 |

Hubble Space Telescope image of the most distant strong lensing galaxy known at z = 1.62.

Color image taken with the Hubble Space Telescope of a strong lens galaxy in the cluster IRC 0218. The lens galaxy is one of the brightest galaxies in the cluster at z = 1.62, making it the highest-redshift strong lens galaxy known. The lens is magnifying a background galaxy at z = 2.26, splitting it into a bright arc (A) and a faint counterimage (B). The lens and source redshifts are confirmed with Keck/LRIS and HST grism spectroscopy. Another faint galaxy (C) is weakly detected by the grism and is consistent with z = 2.26. |
