Scholarship / Research Assistant Position in ASIAA

Closing Date: August 04, 2020

Introduction

We are looking for students (graduate or undergraduate) or research assistants (B.S. or M.S.) to join our research group of protoplanetary disks and planet formation at the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA).
Thousands of exoplanets have been discovered. These exoplanetary systems have diverse properties. It remains unclear as to how and when planets form. Protoplanetary disks around young stars are believed to be nurseries of planets. In order to understand the planet formation process and the origins of the diverse properties of exoplanetary systems, it is essential to study the dynamics as well as physical conditions in protoplanetary disks with observations and numerical simulations, and to observationally search for young planets embedded in protoplanetary disks.
Our research group aims to measure kinematics and gas and dust distributions in protoplanetary disks under the influence by possible young planets embedded in the disks with data obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and to compare observational results with numerical simulations using the FARGO3D code.

Job description

In this project, students or research assistants will be under co-supervision by Dr. Hsi-Wei Yen and Dr. Pin-Gao Gu, and are expected to perform hydrodynamic simulations of a protoplanetary disk with an embedded gas giant planet, analyze the gas motions and density distributions of gas and dust in the simulations, and then compare the simulation results with observational measurements obtained with ALMA.
