The ALCHEMI Atlas: Principal Component Analysis Reveals Starburst Evolution in NGC 253
圖片來源: Nanase Harada
Some galaxies host so-called starburst phenomena, characterized by the intensive formation of stars. The ALCHEMI team has conducted a wide-frequency spectral scan in the starburst galaxy NGC 253 using the data from one of the ALMA large programs to study the properties of the gas, which is the ingredient of stars. Harada et al. (2024) used a statistical method to identify molecular tracers indicative of certain physical phenomena. These tracers revealed various stages of star formation. Some molecular transitions trace interstellar shock waves caused by collisions between molecular clouds, which may eventually induce star formation. Other transitions trace young or more developed star formation. These tracers will help future observations to study other galaxies.
