本所的行星科學研究團隊參與了許多廣泛的研究題目,其中包含:

太陽系科學研究:觀測

在對太陽系的觀測上,本所中美掩星計畫(Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey, TAOS)測量在古柏帶,黃道離散天體及歐特雲天體尺寸的分佈。而下一代的掩星計劃 - 海王星外自動掩星普查計畫(Transneptunian Auotmated Occultation Survey, TAOS-II),目前此計劃的望遠鏡正於墨西哥的聖多白祿天文台興建中,新一代的望遠鏡將會比前一代在偵測速率強100倍。

除了掩星計畫外,本所將利用Subaru 望遠鏡進行Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC SSP)在1400平方度範圍星等 g'=26.4 內搜尋以上的天體。本所的行星科學團隊已經主導這個巡天計劃裡的太陽系科學項目。

HSC SSP是至今最深且最廣的的巡天計劃,有著能夠偵測很暗或很小移動天體的能力,包含了小行星(Asteroid)、半人馬小行星(Centaur)、海王星外星體(Trans-Neptunian Object, TNO)。由本所團隊所建構的程式演算法已經偵測到超過二百顆海王星外星體以及數千顆的小行星。

這個巡天計劃目前還正在執行中,其結果將能提供現今海王星外天體在暗端最精確的星等分佈。這項結果對於結合TAOS II的研究結果上特別的重要。這兩個巡天計劃會在大小分佈上有一小段特別重要的重疊,此結果將為TNO的大小分佈在0.5公里到100公里之間,提供一個連續性的量測。

最後,我們的研究團隊也參與了加法夏望遠鏡(Canada France Hawaii Telescope,CFHT)的大型計劃–外太陽系起源巡天(Outer Solar System Origins Survey, OSSOS)。此計劃在168平方度內搜尋亮度大於r'=24.5的移動天體,目前已經發現將近一千顆新的並且軌道相當準確的TNO。此巡天的結果,包含發現天體及偏差校正的珍貴資料,將可以讓我們更了解各類TNO的動力學起源。

本所的研究團隊也參與了下列各項子計劃:

  • 我們也參與了外太陽系起源巡天的天體顏色分佈計劃(Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey ColOSSOS)。此計劃為雙子星望遠鏡(Gemini-North telescope)及加法夏望遠鏡的大型計劃。此計劃預計觀測約140顆OSSOS所發現的TNO,以得到高精度同步顏色觀測資料(u', g', r', and J)。目前的研究結果證明精準的顏色量測是分類TNO的重要工具。
  • 我們的研究團隊利用HSC量測了60個OSSOS TNOs的光變曲線,目前正在分析此資料以理解旋轉週期、振幅與動力學分佈之間的關係。
  • OSSOS目前偵測到相當多的海王星2:1共振天體(twotino)。利用OSSOS的偏差校正資料,我們將能夠建立一個真實twotino的分佈模型。此結果對於了解早期太陽系巨行星的遷移過程非常重要。

太陽系科學研究:理論

本所團隊在行星科學的理論研究包括太陽系的起源及演化,特別是柯伊伯帶,黃道離散天體及歐特雲的軌道結構。這方面的研究是跟 TAOS 與 TAOS-II計畫有直接關聯。除此之外,我們在太陽系晚期類地行星的重大撞擊事件發生時期,類地行星及巨大行星的演化上有相當的研究成果。

除此之外,我們也參與了有彗星活動的小行星(active asteroids, 包含小行星帶彗星及分裂彗星)的相關研究。此研究利用HSC, Pan-STARRS, and Palomar Transient Factory surveys的資料,結合數值模擬去研究特定天體的動力學行為以及表面的物理性質。小行星帶彗星的冰晶成份對於研究天文生物學上非常的有幫助。而研究分裂彗星(旋轉裂解或是撞擊)則可以讓我們理解太陽系小天體外型的形成過程,並且提供線索去了解內部結構與組成。

系外行星:理論

我們也參與對系外行星理論的研究,尤其是經由對熱木星大氣及內部結構與系外類地行星適居性的模型塑造。熱木星被母星照射,與母星藉潮汐及磁交互作用。潮汐交互作用能大幅地改變年輕熱木星內部結構,甚至摧毁原行星盤的行星,這也能解釋我們現今所觀測到熱木星的質量分布。運用數值模擬來了解母星在磁交互作用下產生行星所引起的幅射。我們也正運用線性波研究在熱木星上由恆星幅射引起的大氣循環問題。
