James Clerk Maxwell Telescope
The JCMT is the largest single-dish telescope in the world dedicated to detecting submillimetre radiation.

Sitting atop the summit of Maunakea on the Big Island in Hawaii, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) is the largest single-element telescope in the world dedicated to detect submillimeter radiation in the Universe. Its 15-meter dish looks at the sky with instruments including the continuum bolometer array SCUBA2 operating at 450μm and 850μm, the 16-pixel heterodyne receiver HARP operating at 850 μm, and the single-pixel three-band heterodyne receiver set Namakanui. Water vapor in the Earth’s atmosphere intercepts the submillimeter radiation, making the high and dry site of Maunakea vitally important for the research performed at the JCMT. Operating between the infrared and radio waves, JCMT detects the coldest material in the Universe, only a few tens of degrees above absolute zero. It enables the studies of celestial objects near our backyard such as comets, planets, and their satellites in our Solar system, star forming clouds and embedded young stars as well as their associated disks in the Galaxy, all the way out to the dust and gas in extra-galaxies at the dawn of the Universe. JCMT is also a partner of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), an international collaboration that has captured, for the first time in history, the image of a supermassive black hole in the galaxy M87.

ASIAA has made important contributions to the JCMT operation, including posting engineers and scientists, and providing the GLT spare receiver set Namakanui. Astronomers in Taiwan are actively involved in the JCMT science, including the majority of the Large Programs
